Choosing a beauty gummy: what to look for on the label
When choosing a beauty gummy, start with the label: the ingredient list, the serving size, who the product is made for, the registration number and how to store it. Collagen, vitamins or other ingredients in the ingredient list describe the composition, not a promised result, so compare products on their labels and follow the stated serving size. If you are taking medication, talk to a doctor first.
What to check on the label
Processed food labels in Indonesia are regulated by BPOM and must include, among other things, the ingredient list, the expiry information and the registration number. Ingredients are listed in order of the amount used, from more to less. An ingredient that the label emphasises, in words or pictures, generally has to have its percentage stated in the ingredient list.
| Ingredient list | Ordered from more to less; percentage of any ingredient the label emphasises |
|---|---|
| Serving size | Figures in the Nutrition Information table are per serving |
| Intended users | Who the product is made for, for example adults |
| Registration number | Can be checked on BPOM's official Cek Produk BPOM website, including its registration category |
| Storage | How to store it, how to store it once opened, and the "Baik digunakan sebelum" (best before) date |
The Cek Produk BPOM website groups registered products by category, including processed food and health supplements, so you can see what a product is registered as. On storage, the expiry date follows the words "Baik digunakan sebelum" (best before), and products not finished in one sitting must state how to store them once opened.
Reading collagen and vitamins on the label
Collagen and vitamins appear in the ingredient list as part of the composition. The ingredient list follows the amount used, but vitamins, minerals and food additives are exempt from this ordering rule, so their position does not necessarily show how much is in the product.
If vitamins or minerals are declared in the Nutrition Information table, they are shown as a percentage of the AKG (Indonesia's daily reference value), meaning the amount in one serving compared with the daily requirement. The table footnote explains that the % AKG is based on an energy requirement of 2150 kcal, and that your energy needs may be higher or lower.
